Getting Started at U.S. Kuo Shu Academy

The free evaluation lesson is a structured, 30-minute introductory experience designed to give you and your child a comprehensive understanding of our academy. From the moment you walk in, our goal is to make you feel welcome and informed. The session begins with a personal tour of our facility, where you can see the training floor, check out our equipment, and get a feel for our clean and professional environment.

Next, your child will have a brief, private lesson with one of our highly-trained instructors. This is not a group class; it is a dedicated one-on-one session. The instructor will guide your child through some fun, basic movements to assess their coordination, ability to focus, and how they respond to instruction. It is a positive, no-pressure way to introduce them to Kung Fu. While your child is on the mat, you will have the opportunity to observe and see our teaching methods in action. After the lesson, the instructor will sit down with you to discuss your child's goals, answer any questions you have, and explain how our program is tailored to help students succeed.

For the initial evaluation lesson, your child should simply wear comfortable, loose-fitting workout clothes (like a t-shirt and sweatpants) and a pair of athletic shoes or sneakers. There is no need to purchase any special gear beforehand.

One of the ways we build trust with new families is by avoiding the large, upfront equipment costs required by some schools. If you decide to enroll after the evaluation, your child will receive a complete, official U.S. Kuo Shu Academy uniform package as part of their enrollment. This ensures they feel like part of the team from day one without any hidden fees. All other necessary training equipment, such as pads and targets for drills, is provided by the academy.

Signing up is a simple and straightforward process. After the evaluation lesson, if you and your child are excited to join our community, our program director will walk you through the membership options and help you select the plan that best fits your family's schedule and budget.

We want you to be completely confident in your decision. That is why we offer a "Love It or Leave It Guarantee" and a three-day cancellation policy for all new members. This gives you peace of mind and reflects our confidence in the quality and value of our program. Once enrolled, you will receive a welcome packet with your uniform and a login to our student portal, where you can access class schedules, lesson videos, and track your child's progress.

Yes, both our Owings Mills and Marriottsville/Ellicott City locations are designed for your convenience and accessibility. Each academy has a large, free parking lot located directly in front of the building, so you will never have to worry about a long walk from your car.

Furthermore, we are committed to being accessible to everyone in our community. Both of our facilities have entrances and restrooms that meet all ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines, ensuring easy access for individuals using wheelchairs or with other mobility needs.

Your Child's First Month at U.S. Kuo Shu Academy
Week 1: The first week of class is similar to a school orientation week. Your child will be welcomed to the school and taught the basics of how to prepare for class, including how to show the proper respect to their classmates and instructors. Students are given orientation folders that give them important information about the school and their training, and are introduced to the concept of character development, which consists of a series of tasks that students are required to complete each week. Students choose their primary class attendance days and are also eligible to be awarded their white sash as they begin the journey of their training.
Week 2: Week 2 is where new students begin to get acclimated to the school culture and turn in their second set of character development sheets. Students are given the first in a series of action step plans to help them progress their training and qualify for Black Sash training.
Week 3: By now, students have acclimated themselves to the class conduct and have established a practice routine at home. After attending several classes, students' physical, emotional, and mental fitness has improved. Additionally, students’ self-confidence is enhanced as they begin to feel comfortable with class procedures and executing techniques.
Week 4: Students turn in their first set of action steps and continue their preparation to train for their black sash and beyond! Students will meet with their private instructor for private instruction, and will have a progress check in which their private instructor will make sure they are progressing at the school, as well as improving and progressing in their personal lives.

Our Programs & Training Philosophy

"Kung Fu" is a popular, general term that most people in the West use to refer to Chinese martial arts. It translates to "skill achieved through hard work." "Kuo Shu," however, has a more specific and profound meaning. It translates to "National Art" or "National Technique".

While the terms are often used interchangeably, "Kuo Shu" represents a more formal, systematic, and comprehensive approach to martial arts education. It implies not just the learning of fighting techniques, but also the study of the art's history, philosophy, and, most importantly, its code of ethics. When you enroll your child at the U.S. Kuo Shu Academy, you are enrolling them in a program that honors this complete tradition, focusing on building character and discipline just as much as physical skill.

Tien Shan Pai is the principal style of Kung Fu taught at our academy. It is a traditional northern Chinese martial art that originated centuries ago in the Tien Shan ("Heavenly Mountain") range of northwestern China.

This style is renowned for being a highly effective and well-rounded system. It is known for its dynamic footwork, powerful long-range kicking techniques, and fluid hand combinations. Tien Shan Pai is not just a fighting style; it is a complete art form that includes empty-hand forms, self-defense applications, a wide variety of traditional weapons training, and joint-locking and grappling techniques. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that our students develop a deep and versatile skill set as they progress on their martial arts journey.

While our core curriculum is centered on the Tien Shan Pai style of Kung Fu, we also have a very strong and distinct program in Tai Chi Chuan (also spelled Taijiquan). Tai Chi is another form of Chinese martial art, but it is practiced very differently. It is known for its slow, graceful, and flowing movements.

Often called "moving meditation," Tai Chi is an exceptional practice for developing balance, reducing stress, and improving overall health and body awareness. It is a low-impact exercise, making it an ideal choice for adults and seniors, individuals with joint issues or limited mobility, or anyone seeking a practice that calms the mind while strengthening the body. We offer dedicated beginner Tai Chi classes every week.

In addition to Tai Qi Quan, we also offer a complete program of Qi Gong, Xing Yi Quan, and Ba Gua Zhang.

Yes, all of our classes are carefully structured by both age and experience level to ensure every student receives the best possible instruction in a safe and appropriate environment. We have dedicated classes specifically for young children, teens, and adults.

We also offer a unique opportunity for families to train together in our family classes. These classes are specially designed so that parents and children can learn side-by-side. It is a wonderful way for families to share a healthy activity, and it provides a great support system for children who might be nervous about starting something new. During these classes, we often begin with a group activity before separating adults and children for age-appropriate drills, ensuring everyone gets a great workout and relevant instruction.

Earning a black sash is a significant achievement that represents years of dedicated training, perseverance, and mastery of the art. The journey is unique for every student, and there is no fixed timeline. It is a marathon, not a sprint.

At the beginner levels, students who train consistently can typically test for a new sash every six to eight weeks. This provides regular goals and a sense of accomplishment. However, as a student advances to the intermediate and advanced ranks, the requirements become progressively more demanding, and the time between promotions increases significantly. This system ensures that our black sashes are earned through genuine skill and commitment, not just time served. It is the direct opposite of a "belt mill," where ranks are given out easily. Our standard is one of excellence, and the black sash reflects that.

For Parents & Young Students: Building Character & Confidence

Our program addresses bullying from two critical angles: building internal resilience and teaching external skills. We believe the most effective anti-bullying tool is "unshakable self-confidence". Children who carry themselves with confidence and self-respect are statistically far less likely to become targets for bullies. Our training is designed to build this confidence from the inside out by celebrating personal growth and achievement in a supportive community.

Beyond building confidence, we equip students with the practical tools to handle aggressive situations. They learn situational awareness to recognize and avoid potential trouble. They practice verbal de-escalation techniques to defuse conflicts before they become physical. And, as a last resort, they learn highly effective, real-world self-defense skills to protect themselves from harm. Our goal is to empower children so they never have to be a victim, teaching them to be assertive and in control, not aggressive.

This is an excellent question that gets to the heart of the difference in philosophy between traditional martial arts and modern combat sports. While both teach effective fighting techniques, their ultimate goals are different. Our traditional Kung Fu program is exceptionally effective for real-world self-defense because it was designed for that purpose, not for sport competition.

The fundamental distinction lies in the approach. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) are primarily combat sports designed for one-on-one competition in a ring or on a mat, with a specific set of rules, weight classes, and time limits. Their focus is on athletic conditioning and techniques that lead to a win under those rules.

Traditional Kuo Shu, on the other hand, is a holistic martial art designed for life. Its goal is the complete development of the individual—mind, body, and spirit. The self-defense techniques are comprehensive, covering all ranges of combat, including striking, kicking, grappling, joint locks, and throws, without being limited by sport-specific rules. More importantly, the training is embedded in a system of ethics that teaches students when and why to use their skills, emphasizing discipline, respect, and self-control. For a child's overall development, this focus on character and responsible self-defense provides a far more valuable and well-rounded education than a purely sport-focused approach.

The safety of our students is our absolute highest priority. All training activities are conducted in a highly controlled and supervised environment. Partner drills are introduced gradually, and contact is always kept light and controlled to ensure that students can learn and practice techniques without risk of injury. We have a culture of mutual respect, where students are taught to take care of their training partners.

To ensure every child receives proper attention and guidance, we maintain a small student-to-instructor ratio in all of our classes. While class sizes can vary, we typically have one qualified instructor for every ten students. This allows our teachers to provide individual feedback and ensure that everyone is practicing safely and correctly.

Weapons training and sparring are exciting parts of martial arts, but they are introduced only after a student has built a strong and solid foundation in the basics. This progressive approach ensures both safety and quality of learning.

Weapons training in styles like the long staff, broadsword, straight sword, and spear begins when a student earns their green sash. By this point, they have demonstrated the focus, discipline, and body control necessary to handle a training weapon responsibly. Similarly, sparring (or "San Da") is introduced in gradual stages. Students begin with pre-arranged, light-contact drills and only progress to more free-form sparring after they have developed sufficient skill and self-control.

Tuition, Memberships & School Policies

We believe in providing clear, upfront information about tuition. A ballpark figure for our tuition is between $65 and $70 per week for both youth and adult programs. While specific pricing depends on the program you choose and any family discounts that may apply. We believe in transparency, which is why we discuss all tuition options with you during your complimentary evaluation lesson.

We will go over all specific membership options and family plans with you during your child's free evaluation lesson to find the best fit for your family's needs and budget.

A significant concern for parents exploring martial arts is the prevalence of hidden fees, a practice common at some commercial schools, often called "McDojos". We are proud to be different. Our tuition is structured to be as inclusive as possible to build trust and provide outstanding value. At the U.S. Kuo Shu Academy:

  • There are NO extra fees for sash testing or promotions. Your child's advancement is based on merit, not additional payments.

Your child's first uniform is included with enrollment. There is no need to purchase an expensive equipment package to get started.

No. We are committed to transparency and believe that a student's progress should be celebrated, not charged for. Unlike many other schools that have additional charges for these items, at the U.S. Kuo Shu Academy, your monthly tuition is refreshingly inclusive.

Specifically:

  • Your child's first official school uniform is included with your enrollment.
  • All fees for sash testing and promotions are included in your tuition for the lifetime of your training.

The only costs not included in tuition are for optional activities. This includes fees for competing in external tournaments (which is encouraged but not required).

Yes, we absolutely do. We believe that families who train together grow stronger together, and we strongly encourage family participation with special tuition plans. Martial arts is one of the few activities that children, parents, and even grandparents can participate in side-by-side. Our family plans make it more affordable for multiple family members to join our community and share in the journey of learning Kuo Shu. Please ask our program director about these options during your visit.

We understand that life can be unpredictable. To ensure you feel completely comfortable with your decision to join, we offer a three-day, no-questions-asked cancellation policy for all new memberships. This is part of our "Love It or Leave It Guarantee".

Furthermore, we know that things like injuries, family emergencies, or extended travel can happen. If you need to extend your training for any reason, we offer the ability to extend your training time without any penalty or fees. We are committed to working with our students and their families to accommodate life's challenges, ensuring you can always return to your training when the time is right. This is something that almost no one offers!
