What Does Winning Really Mean?

As we head into tournament season, we’re reminding our students that winning begins long before medals are awarded. Coach Frank Dick, one of the United Kingdom’s most accomplished high-performance coaches and the architect behind Britain’s rise to international success in track and field, captures this beautifully in one of his most famous stories.

He describes coaching a nine-year-old girl running her first 100 meters. She finished last and came back in tears—until he reframed the moment:

“No, you weren’t last… you were 18 seconds. You smashed the 20-second barrier.” From that moment, she understood that real winning isn’t about beating others. As he told her, “Winning is being better today than you were yesterday.”

This mindset is exactly what we want our students to carry into competition. Every stronger stance, every cleaner form, every moment of courage on the floor is a victory. Challenge is what makes us grow; pressure is what sharpens our skills. When we focus on personal progress, we step into the ring already winning. Let’s enter tournament season with that spirit—focused, confident, and committed to becoming just a little better each day.
