Values in Action at USKSA

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy wrote a closing letter to the American people where he reflects on the deeper root causes of pain and unhappiness in the U.S., which he has grappled with during his two terms. He identifies three essential elements for fulfillment and well-being: relationships, service, and purpose. These elements significantly impact physical and mental health, reducing risks for heart disease, depression, anxiety, and premature death, while fostering a connection to something bigger than oneself.

Dr. Murthy says "Relationships keep us grounded and bonded to each other. Service, from formal volunteering to informal small acts of kindness, is about helping each other. And purpose gives our life a sense of direction and meaning. Together, these elements form the triad of fulfillment." Click here to read more about his letter.

As we consider Dr. Murthy's insightful prescription for a fulfilling life, it's heartening to see these values in action within our community. For more than fifty years, the U.S. Kuo Shu Academy has been committed to fostering the values of relationships, service, and purpose, making a positive difference in the lives of thousands of students.

One shining example is Ms. Santos, a second degree Tien Shan Pai Black Sash and accomplished professional artist who has dedicated her career to nurturing and teaching young artists. She was awarded the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award and Medal of Honor for Service last year in recognition of her efforts. Ms. Santos sees a direct connection between her black sash journey and her achievements off the mat:

“The culture, the camaraderie, the collective effort that creates the USKSA community unwittingly draws you in and you become an integral part of that effort to elevate others as you elevate yourself. Because of the help and encouragement of my classmates and excellent teachers, I have profound gratitude and am deeply proud to be a part of a community that cares about the quality of its instruction, the well-being of its students, and the positive and joyful culture it creates beyond the walls of the school.

To be a part of this diverse and caring martial arts community that is genuine in its intentions, authentic in its teachings, and offers a myriad of opportunities for growth, learning, and development on so many levels, mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, and professionally, is in essence, to be part of something transformative and worthwhile, for oneself and by ripple effect, for the world-at-large.”
