Leadership In Action: Lessons From GrandMaster Huang

In each USKSA school, you’ll find a poster bearing the words of Grandmaster Huang, Chien-Liang:The bigger the problem you can handle, the bigger leader you can become.

This quote isn’t just a motto—it’s a reflection of Grandmaster Huang’s journey. On April 26, 1973, he arrived in the United States with nothing but his bags and the knowledge of Kung Fu. Despite the challenges, he remained focused on his mission: to share the Tien Shan Pai style and build a legacy of martial arts excellence.

In his 50th anniversary bookThe Dragon of Tien Shan Pai, he recalls:

"An opportunity arose in January 1975 for me to open my own school in Ohio. With the help of one of my students, I relocated to Cincinnati to open Tien Sun Wushu School. To my knowledge, it was the first time anyone used the Tien Shan Pai name in the U.S. Now that I had my own school, I decided to adhere to a more traditional way of teaching, and one that not only emphasized strong martial arts, but also development of good character: respect, loyalty, humility, and compassion.

The methods of training that I used paid off. In 1980, I brought a team of six students to the International Chinese Kuo Shu Federation’s (ICKF) 3rd World Tournament in Hawaii. No one expected our freshman team to even place, let alone return home with six trophies.”

So when you feel overwhelmed or unsure of your path, remember: Every great leader begins by facing challenges. The strength to persevere, the courage to lead, and the character to uplift others—that’s what transforms obstacles into legacy.
