Dedication Through Martial Arts 武 (wǔ) — Part 3
As we conclude this three-part series on Grandmaster Huang, Chien-Liang's dedication to martial arts, we turn to the meaning behind Wu Kui Tang and the significance of the sign that hangs at the entrance of our school. This final section highlights how that name came to be and why it represents far more than a decorative plaque. It stands as a symbol of lineage, trust, and the enduring bond between teacher and student.
In 1985, Supreme Master Wang asked Grandmaster Huang to bring some wood and paint to his school. Huang obliged, and once he procured the materials, Wang produced seven panels of calligraphy for Huang. Among the panels were a set of three that bore tremendous significance, with the largest bearing the characters, “Wu Kui Tang (武魁堂),” which translates to “Top Martial Hall.” Supreme Master Wang had presented Huang his own school name.
This has bold implications in traditional Chinese martial arts. In the past, when martial artists opened a new school, others would challenge their skills to demand proof of their expertise. Such challenges might not only result in serious injury, but losers could also be forced to close their schools. So to protect themselves, martial artists would use their teacher’s school name so that challengers could see that they were affiliated with someone of formidable kung fu skills and that they were part of a larger association. But when a teacher has confidence in his student’s skills and believes the student is capable of defending himself, the teacher will give that student his blessing and a name for his own school.
Today, when we look up at the Wu Kui Tang sign hanging in our own school, we are reminded of the legacy behind it. It represents not only the confidence Supreme Master Wang placed in Grandmaster Huang, but also the tradition and integrity we inherit as students. Standing beneath that sign, we can appreciate how fortunate we are to train in a school with such meaningful history and lineage.
