Moving Meditation

New students start their journey in Tai Ji Quan with four components:

• Meditation
• Warm-Up and Stretching
• Qi Gong also spelled chi kung (Breathing exercises)
• Form (pre-arranged sequences of techniques often referred to as moving meditation)

“Since I started studying at USKSA in 2011 my mental and physical health has significantly improved. I started training with a clinical diagnosis of mild depression, PTSD and bilateral osteoarthritis in both of my hips. I started studying Hsing-I because there is something about the straight forward nature of the art that really resonated with me and the fact that I have two bum hips seemed to exclude me from doing lots of Kung Fu.

Studying at USKSA has helped me significantly destress and unwind myself mentally, physically, and emotionally. However, I will be eternally thankful to Shi Ye and Master Huang for teaching me how to meditate. The ability to meditate and get the heck out of my own head, out of my own mental nets of “how life should show up” has really been a God send to me.

Right now as I write this paper my life is much safer, calmer and more manageable as a direct result of the training, leadership and tutelage I have received by studying at USKSA.”

Balance & Control

After developing skills at the beginner level, students start to take on paired exercises (called “pushing hands”) to develop specific skills and learn weapon routines. Later, some students elect to participate in the school Daoist meditation curriculum to develop a more in-depth understanding of these Chinese arts.

Tai Ji Quan emphasizes yielding to the oncoming force, neutralizing the attack, and then counterattacking. Our curriculum includes Yang style Tai Ji Quan, Chen Pan Ling (a combination of Yang, Chen, and Wu style), and Ancient form.

Tien Shan Pai

The style originated in the Tien Shan mountains of northwestern China. It is well known as an effective self-defense system. Tien Shan Pai self-defense techniques focus on footwork and angled attacks. Students are also trained in qin na (control or lock of an opponent’s joints or muscles/tendons), Shuai Jiao (Chinese wrestling/throwing), san da (set fighting techniques), and self-defense. We offer training in iron palm, pole, and martial qi gong for advanced practitioners.
